Castle Azay-Le-Ferron and rose garden
Castle AZAY-le-FERRON is a typical example of the beautiful castles of the Loire. It is located at the gates of Brenne. AZAY-le-FERRON, dependent on the Barony of Preuilly sur Claise, was therefore located in the province of Touraine.
The castle is made up of four parts built at different times: the Frotier tower (late 15th century), the Humières wing (mid-17th century), the François 1er pavilion (16th century), and the Breteuil pavilion (18th century). The common, said the wing Cingé, are for their part of the XVIIth century and are connected to the castle by a gallery inspired of that of the castle of Valençay and built in 1926.
Several large families have owned AZAY-le-FERRON, including Gregory Michel,Napoleon’s armies banker. The castle was subsequently sold to the Luzarche family, family of “Maitres de Forges in the 19th century. In 1951, Mrs. Hersent, daughter of Madame Luzarche, bequeathed the castle and the estate adjoining the city of Tours.
Mr. Luzarche maintained a beautiful crew of venery whose motto was “Until the end”. A stuffed wolf called “Cacao” is exposed in the grand staircase. His story deserves to be told: one day, while hunting the wolf, Azay’s crew caught a wolf that had just given birth to wolf cubs. One of them was captured and tamed, and he participated in the hunt with the pack of dogs. At the age of twelve, blind, he drowned in one of the basins of the castle park and, in memory, was stuffed.
